JOWAI, Feb 16: Residents of three villages — Lummuriap, Thadialong, Thadbamon — in West Jaintia Hills were sensitised on women health, menstrual hygiene, sanitation and cervical cancer among rural women during a district-level medical camp organised by the Jaintia Hills Development Society (JHDS) and NABARD in association with NabFoundation, Mumbai, and District Medical and Health Officers of Barato and Sahsniang PHCs.
Three self-help groups (SHGs) promoted by Meghalaya State Rural Livelihoods Society (MSRLS) and JHDS will partake in the year-long project in West Jaintia Hills, which is the only district to be selected from Meghalaya for the project.
As part of the project, the SHGs will start manufacturing sanitary pads with training and skills as well as raw material from India’s famous ‘Pad-Man’ and Padma Shri, Dr Arunachalam Muruganantham.
Women will pilot the project while focusing on livelihoods, cheap pads which will be accessible to schools, Angawadi centres and rural homes.
