SHILLONG, Feb 19: A group of GVK EMRI (Emergency Management and Research Institute) employees on Friday met a group of Congress legislators and urged them to raise their grievances with the state government.
The employees, during a meeting with the four Congress MLAs, conferred about their salary component, which is reportedly lower than the approved rates of skilled and unskilled labourers fixed by the state government.
During the discussions, some employees bemoaned that their salaries have not been increased despite rendering service for 11 years.
The staff also rued the fact that they have not even been covered by insurance.
Congress MLA, HM Shangpliang, later told reporters that employees have suggested that the whole system of functioning of the services should be changed from GVK style and it should be operated by the state government.
During the meeting, the employees said that they prefer the state government to come up with some kind of PSU-like mechanism where it will be a state undertaking, so that all the employees will enjoy the perk of the government and salaries as per the labour laws of the state.
As the contract of GVK with the state government will expire on March 31, the employees want the government not to extend it but rather do something that will be beneficial in the long run.
