City lad to represent India in scout event in Japan

SHILLONG: Emerging as the only rover scout chosen from the North East region and one of the three scouts from all over the country, Valentino B Lyngdoh is proud to represent India in the ‘Road to Japan’ event to be held at Yamaguchi Prefecture, Japan from October 26 to November 5.

Valentino, a rover scout of the Boscorean Scout group which is a constituent of Meghalaya Bharat Scouts and Guides (MBSG) and a student of KL Bajoria College has been selected out of the 13 applicants on a scholarship basis to participate in this event held every 5 years by Japan.

The ‘Road to Japan’ will see the participation of 12 countries, besides India and host Japan, who will be sitting together to plan for the 2014 World Scout Jamboree to be hosted by Japan.

“I thank God for giving me this opportunity and I am glad to be chosen for this event. None of this would be possible without the support of my parents and my teachers,” Valentino told pressmen here on Wednesday.

The young rover scout who will be joining two others – one from Andhra Pradesh and the other from Jammu and Kashmir – for their flight to Japan on October 25.

“I am hoping to learn certain new things and will definitely come back home with new ideas,” the young rover scout said.

Elaborating on the event, State secretary of MBSG, A Swer, said the each of the 12 countries will send three representatives who will take part in the planning event of the 2014 World Scout Jamboree at Japan.

Meanwhile, it was informed that by 2013, the MBSG is planning to implement its pilot project – reaching out policies with an intention to reach out to street children, children at juvenile homes, shelter homes and others.
