SHILLONG, March 12: As the sword of service termination hangs over their heads, the contractual teachers under the banner of All Meghalaya Government Upper Primary Contractual Teachers Association have urged upon the state government not to snatch away their job since their contracts have not been renewed since December 2020.
“The government has not renewed their contracts after they had conducted the MTET examination. We never expected that the test was conducted to fill up contractual teachers’ posts in various upper primary schools,” the Association president, Eibar Nongsiej, said in a statement issued here on Friday.
The teachers assumed that the MTET was conducted to fill up the fresh vacant posts, Nongsiej said, adding that they were all caught by surprise when they learnt that the examination was to fill up the existing contractual teachers’ posts.
The Association president pointed out that the contractual teachers will land up in peril if they are robbed off of their jobs.
“Most of the teachers would be facing great difficulties in taking care of their families if they lose their jobs. I hope that the government will recognise our contribution in moulding the future of many of the students in the past years,” Nongsiej said.

Meanwhile, the first phase of agitation by the Khasi Jaintia Deficit School Teachers Association and Garo Hills Deficit Schools Teachers and Employees Association concluded on Friday.
The organisations, while thanking all colleagues for the support, urged them to resume duty on Monday until further information and direction from the joint action committee (JAC).
