M’laya remembers eight police martyrs

SHILLONG: Meghalaya Director General of Police N Ramachandran on Sunday called upon the State Police personnel to rededicate themselves for the cause of the State and country, while asking them to remember the supreme sacrifice made by their colleagues who died on the line of duty.

Speaking at the Police Commemoration Day Parade at the Police Reserve here, the DGP paid glowing tributes to eight State Police personnel who laid down their lives on the line of duty in the last one year.

“The State Police has lost eight of its brave personnel while fighting against militancy, terrorism and other criminal activities,” Ramachandran said.

On the occasion, a police contingent presented a Guard of Honour to the DGP while East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police M Kharkrang, read out the names of the 566 police and para-military personnel including eight from Meghalaya, who had lost their lives on duty in different parts of the country from September 1, 2011 to August 31, 2012.

The eight police personnel who died in the past one year are William Mawiong, Pabitra KR Boro, Prebinson Sangma, Victor Marak, Eightprilson M Sangma, Pearson Marak, Alexander Ch Marak and Namseng R Marak (all police constables).

The Commemoration Day was observed all over the country to remember those personnel who died while carrying out operations against insurgents, and during riots, anti-criminal activities and other duties.
