SHILLONG, March 22: With the election campaign for the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) polls picking up steam, senior BJP leader AL Hek exuded confidence that the saffron party will not only better its previous performance but would also form the new executive committee in the Council.
“Our candidates are doing quite well and we expect to win many more seats this time,” Hek, who is also the health minister, said.
Asking people to vote for BJP, Hek outlined the development initiatives launched by the BJP-led central government in Garo Hills.
He informed that he would visit Garo Hills on March 25 to campaign for the party.
The saffron party, which has fielded candidates in 21 of the 29 seats in the GHADC, is yet to announce any pre-poll pact with any party.
The 17-point election manifesto released by the BJP lays emphasis on empowering the GHADC by transforming it into a territorial council while according more power, creating more departments and channelising direct funding from the Centre by speeding up the proposed amendments to the Sixth Schedule.
‘Law permits non-tribal participation in polls’
Asked about the opposition to the participation of non-tribals in the GHADC polls, Hek said that as long as the law permits it, nobody should attempt to create animosity between tribals and non-tribals.
“I don’t have any difference with anybody as we all are human beings,” Hek said.
