SHILLONG: Unhappy with the tardy progress of the Umiam-Jorabat four-lane project, the construction company M/s IL&FS Transportation Network Ltd has decided to rope in a new team for fast completion of the project.

Officials of the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI) on Friday said that the new team is one of the best teams the company has, adding, “With the new team we can hope that things will materialize in a few months.”

However, a major controversy with regards to the Umsning Bypass is still unresolved as the land acquisition process is currently going on for the Bypass, an integral part of the four-lane road project.

The NHAI is currently waiting for the State Government to hand over land for construction of the Umsning Bypass.

Adding to the problem is a pending court case filed by residents of Umsning against the Government’s reversal of its earlier decision to construct the four-lane road through the existing Umsning road.

NHAI has been given a January 2014 deadline to complete the project but there is a strong likelihood that the deadline would be missed.

Reacting to a query, NHAI sources said the project so far has achieved a physical progress of 45 per cent.
