SHILLONG, March 24: A mini truck carrying fodder caught fire near Rhino point here on Wednesday evening.
According to police, the driver of the vehicle, Kynsanborlang Nongtri, along with two others — Boklang Nongtri, Kyrshanlang Mawnai and Sumarlang Kharkongor — were waiting for the buyer of the fodder at Anjalee petrol pump after journeying from Mawrong village near Umsning, Ri Bhoi.
The buyer had instructed them to park the vehicle till 10 pm. The driver parked the vehicle on the roadside opposite Human Rights Office (Arunachal Building).
A little late, they were informed them that the haystack had caught fire.
After being alerted, the trio disembarked the vehicle and even attempted to unload the hay but to no avail as the fire spread rapidly.
Seeing the fire spread further to the pine trees nearby, the panic-struck driver moved the vehicle towards Rhino Point but the on-duty traffic personnel diverted the truck to Boucher Road as it is less crowded.
However, the firefighters managed to douse the fire before it could do any more harm. No casualty was reported.
The cause of the incident is not yet known.
