SHILLONG: Hokson Lyngdoh Marshilong, of Upper Lumparing, successfully scaled the 6,488-metre Mount Gorichen in Tawang District of Arunachal Pradesh earlier this month.

Marshilong was part of an expedition organised by the Indian Mountaineering Foundation and the government of Arunachal Pradesh.

The expedition, led by Dr KR Romeo, was flagged off on September 22 by the Governor, Gen (retired) JJ Singh, and flagged in on October 22 by Nabam Tuki, the Chief Minister of Arunachal Pradesh.

The team of 13 mountaineers were from Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, West Bengal, Mizoram, Assam, Jammu & Kashmir as well as the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

Of the 13 mountaineers to take part, four were women.

Mt Gorichen is the third highest peak in the North East region, not including Sikkim.

It is locally known as Gangrichen, which means the “Mighty Glacier”.

The team of 13 became the first ever civilian group to scale the breathtaking mountain.

The Arunachal government also announced an award of Rs 1 lakh for each team member.

Marshilong took part in this expedition at his own expense.
