SHILLONG: Following demand of action against those involved in alleged manipulations in the appointment assistant teachers in lower primary schools from several political parties and NGOs, Deputy Speaker Sanbor Shullai, whose name also figured in the CBI report, has clarified that as a legislator and a member of the district council he had only recommended a few names of eligible candidates.

Unhappy over NGOs and other political parties calling him a ‘tainted’ politician, Shullai in a statement on Saturday said, “Allegation of the NGOs and some political parties is unacceptable. They cannot term me in this manner.”

“Since 1994 when I became MDC, job aspirants used to come to me and I used to forward their manes with a request to consider for appointments after checking whether they fulfill the criteria, ” Shullai said. According to him, it was upto the concerned boards to consider the names recommended by him or other legislators. “If the candidates are not good, the boards can reject their candidature,” he added. Shullai said there is no law which bars legislators and MDCs from putting forward recommendations. Shullai had recommended four names as per the CBI report. Earlier, the Speaker Charles Pyngrope, who recommended three candidates , said that all the candidates recommended by him had requisite qualifications.
