MAWKYRWAT, April 26: On account of an alarming surge in the number of COVID-19 cases in the state, the South West Khasi Hills district administration on Monday decided to roll up its sleeves and conduct a surprise checking drive to ensure people adhere to COVID-19 protocols issued by the state government.
During the course of inspection, the police and officials from the DTO found that many commercial vehicles flouted the orders by overloading. They were told to ensure that they ferry only the specified number of passengers, as per government orders.
Since it was Market Day at Mawkyrwat, the officials also patrolled the market area and advised people to wear masks in public places and to avoid crowded places. Moreover, the shopkeepers were also asked to display instructions in front of their shops so as to ensure the public maintain social distance.
In the last few days, majority of the people in Mawkyrwat have worn their masks while they visited public places, however there were some who threw caution to the wind which compelled the officials to come out for a surprise inspection.
