SHILLONG: The Hynniewtrep National Youth Front, Mairang Sub-division circle and Western Region on Thursday asked the State Government to upgrade the U Tirot Sing Memorial College into a government college.

The association announced their demands in a memorandum submitted to Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma and Education Minister Prof RC Laloo here on Thursday.

“Upgradation of this college would provide equal opportunities to the poorer section of the society and it will cater to the needs of rural students especially those coming from poor family background,” the memorandum said.

HNYF leader KS Rani pointed out that Mawkyrwat College in the newly-created South West Khasi Hills district was established much later than Tirot Sing Memorial College but has already been upgraded to a government college.

The memorandum stated that the college, which was established in 1981, is facing stringent financial crunch as it is being run by the Dorbar of Nongkhlaw Syiemship with very limited resources.
