Lockdown in 4 SWKH villages

MAWKYRWAT/JOWAI, May 19: ‘Complete lockdown’ has been imposed in four villages of South West Khasi Hills — Mawkyrwat, Mawlangwir, Mawten and Nonglang — with effect from 5 am of May 24 till 5 am of May 31, the Deputy Commissioner of South West Khasi Hills, Caramai Kharkongor, said in an order on Wednesday.
The DC informed that the move was made to prevent an uncontrollable surge in cases of COVID-19 as they continue to rise.
The DC’s order informed that Mawkyrwat Market will be closed down completely and all government offices, banks, post office, schools, colleges, institutions etc, in the aforementioned villages will be closed during the period. Funeral gathering is to be restricted to 10 persons with prior permission from the DC, the order stated.
However, State Bank of India, Mawkyrwat Branch, is allowed to open strictly for government transactions. The ATM located within the premises of the bank will be allowed to operate and with strict regulation by the bank’s security guard.
“All essential commodities like rice / sugar/ dall potatoes etc are available abundantly and people are requested not to resort to panic buying or hoarding. Hoarding of essentials is a punishable offence,” the order said.
Curbs eased
The District Magistrate of West Jaintia Hills, in an order on Wednesday, partially lifted the containment order from Panaliar locality in the district while also informing that the micro-containment of Kynjing Colony and Pamhadem will continue until further orders.
According to the order, all economic activities and movement of people within the locality has been resumed. However, movement to and fro Kynjing Colony and Pamhadem is still prohibited.
