AIZAWL:Mizoram home minister R. Lalzirliana on Monday said that the former jawans of the disbanded second battalion of the Assam Regiment would be given Rs 1,000 per month as financial assistance. In a written reply to a query from the ruling Congress member Lt. Colonel Z. S. Zuala, Lalzirliana said that the government order to this effect was issued on May 25 following the resolution adopted by the state assembly. The 2nd battalion of the Assam Regiment, dominated by Mizos, was disbanded in the early 1960s and disgrunteld with the government, many former soldiers in the disbanded regiment joined the underground Mizo National Front (MNF) when the outfit took up arms against the Indian Union in 1966. 1,57,465 doubtful voters
GUWAHATI:There are 1,57,465 doubtful or ‘D’ voters in Assam and their credentials are being examined legally, Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi said on Monday.Replying to a question by AIUDF legislator Sherman Ali Ahmed in the assembly, the chief minister said 5577 of the doubtful voters have been found to be foreigners and necessary measures have been taken to deport them. Gogoi said he had received complaints from some organisations regarding harassment of genuine Indian citizens as doubtful voters and necessary enquiries are being made in this regard. ”If any official has been found guilty of harassing genuine Indian citizens as ‘D’ voters, action will be taken against them according to the law of the land”, he said. Asked whether compensation will be paid to genuine citizens for being harassed as doubtful voters, Gogoi said there was no such provision under the existing law. (PTI)
Man killed by lightning
AIZAWL:A 20-year-old man was killed by lightning near Mizoram-Myanmar border on River Tuipui on Monday and two others were also rendered unconscious for sometime, police said. Police said that Lalruatpuia, his mother and sister were resting in their jhum hut while lightning struck, killing Lalruatpuia, who was standing near the door of the hut on the spot while his mother and sister also remained unconscious for sometime, but did not sustain any injury. Lalruatpuia’s funeral would be held at Tualte village after police conducted inquest and no autopsy would be performed, police added. (PTI)

IMPHAL:A cadre of People’s Revolutionary Party of Kangleipak (PREPAK GS) has been nabbed by Imphal West police.L Kailun, Senior Superintendent of Police, Imphal West on Monday said a 16-year-old boy of Naoremthong Laishram Leirak was apprehended by Imphal West police from his house on Sunday.The boy joined the organization in 2008 and was given military training at Burma.
