SHILLONG: With an aim to speed up trial and disposal of cases, the State Cabinet has approved a few reforms in the justice delivery system.
Speaking to reporters after a Cabinet meeting here on Wednesday, Deputy Chief Minister BM Lanong said these reforms were proposed and examined by the law department with reference to quick trial, effective disposal of cases and bringing uniformity in the system with the rest of the country.
The reforms proposed at an all India conferences of Chief Ministers, chief justice of the Supreme Court and chief justice of high courts held in Delhi in August, 2009 were examined by the State Law Department, Lanong, who holds law portfolio, said adding some of the proposed reforms were accepted by the department and subsequently approved by the Cabinet.
The Deputy Chief Minister informed that a copy of the proposals discussed in the conference was sent to the state government and accordingly, a committee under the chairmanship of the Law Minister, was formed to study the proposals.
“After studying the proposals, we accepted certain reforms and a few will be examined at a later stage,” he said.
Referring to the 2009 conference, Lanong said several reforms ranging from speedy trial, proposal to set up a family court to handle all the family-related litigations to proposal to set up a morning court and evening court were discussed in the meeting.
Enumerating the initiatives taken by the government, he said, “The reforms are approved by the State Cabinet to bring improvement in the justice delivery system and to ensure that cases are handled more effectively before their disposal”.
Other reforms include appointment of judicial officers, imparting training and the likes for an effective handling of cases.
