SHILLONG, June 30: Social Welfare Minister Kyrmen Shylla has expressed confidence that the ongoing crackdown by Assam Police on drug mafia will lead to a decline in such activities here since the neighbouring state is used a route to smuggle narcotics into Meghalaya.
“The crackdown initiated by the Assam Government would surely reduce the menace of drug abuse in Meghalaya,” the minister said.
He also acknowledged the endeavours of the Meghalaya Police towards checking the drug menace by cracking the whip on drug smugglers.
It may be mentioned that between May 10 and June 4, police across Assam have registered 342 cases and arrested 596 people in connection with drugs. Over 10 kilograms of heroin, nearly 6,000 kilograms of marijuana, over two lakh illegal tablets and around Rs 20 lakh in cash have been confiscated during this period.
