SHILLONG, July 19: The Cabinet on Monday approved the proposal to initiate the process of having a joint venture for the Mawmluh Cherra Cement Limited (MCCL).
Speaking to media persons after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said that the MCCL has been subjected to financial woes. “The state government has to take a decision and prepare things to move forward as even the production in the MCCL is not taking place right now,” Conrad said.
The chief minister also informed that he, in the past 6-8 months, had held several meetings with stakeholders of the MCCL including employees, management, landowners, mine owners and global representatives.
He said the meetings explored the idea if the state government can invest Rs 190 crore to revive MCCL.
Conrad said the second option was to explore if a joint venture partner can be found while the third option was to close down the MCCL. “We have decided to clear the proposal to go for the joint venture, keeping in mind the inability of the state government to invest Rs 190 crore at this point of time.
We felt that the joint venture would be the best option,” he said.
Public schools to be brought under DSEL
Meanwhile, the Cabinet also approved the proposal to bring Pine Mount School and three other public schools in the state under the jurisdiction of the Directorate of School Education and Literacy (DSEL).
Speaking to reporters after the Cabinet meeting, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma informed that Pine Mount School and other public schools have been under the jurisdiction of the Directorate of Higher & Technical Education (DHTE).
“As you are aware, these schools are up to Class XII and all the higher secondary schools in the state are under DSEL. Therefore, we have taken a decision that the Pine Mount School and the three other public schools should also come under the jurisdiction of the DSEL instead of the DHTE,” Conrad added.
