Grenade found in Tura main market

TURA: A high explosive hand grenade recovered from the heart of Tura main market sometime during the early hours of Tuesday sent shock waves among the business community and the public and speculation is rife that the attempt to create mayhem was undertaken either by the GNLA or the breakaway faction ANVC-B.

Tura police were in for a shock when early morning pedestrians called up the police station to report a strange object that looked like a hand grenade lying by the side of a drain opposite the Soni Studio and Kamala Store area.

The device was first spotted between 5 -5.30 am by some passersby.

The bomb squad was pressed into service. The grenade, identified as an HE 35 explosive, was placed inside a bomb proof container and escorted to the premises of the 2nd MLP battalion in Goeragre where it was safely detonated before the presence of a magistrate. No one has been arrested in this connection.

Meanwhile, the GNLA, which along with the ANVC-B is a prime suspect, has denied involvement in the incident.

Conrad apprises House of Tura situation : Meanwhile, Concerned over the recovery of a grenade from Tura Super Market, the Opposition Leader Conrad Sangma brought this to the notice of the House during the session on Tuesday.

Before the culmination of Tuesday’s proceedings, raising a point of order, Sangma said that the incident has created panic among the people adding that the trend is very disturbing.

While stating that there is already fear psychosis among traders as well as the shoppers during this is festive season, Sangma asked the Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma to table a statement on the incident in the Assembly.

The Opposition Leader informed that he had already moved a motion to discuss the worsening law and order situation in Garo Hills.
