TURA, July 27: Women, numbering in hundreds from Kharkutta and Adokgre region of North Garo Hills, on Monday protested against the arrest of three men for allegedly leading an assault on a PWD official over allegations of immoral activities. The women, during the protest rally, also demanded action against the PWD official.
The women during Monday’s protest marched through the main thoroughfares of Adokgre, holding banners and placards, demanding action against the official and release of the trio. “They are not sisters but involved in flesh trade, he has lied to authorities,” read the placards.
Earlier, the PWD official, RN Marak, had, following the assault, lodged a complaint with Adokgre police station and said that among the two women he was found with at his residence, one was his sister while the other was her friend.
“We want stern action against him and removal from Adokgre,” another placard read, with the womenfolk warning that they will not allow the official to remain in the area anymore.
Earlier, the trio — Phantom O Sangma (27), Azariah A Momin (21) and Churik A Momin (25) — was arrested after it allegedly led a mob to the PWD official’s house and on finding him with two women at his residence assaulted him.
The men also reportedly assaulted the women and videotaped the incident, which later did rounds on social media.
