SHILLONG: With no takers for any pre-poll alliance, political parties in the State are now left with the option of post-poll alliances.

Prior to every Assembly elections, there is always a buzz over the pre- poll alliance, but it fizzles out when the election approaches. There is no difference this time too.

It was first the Purno Sangma-led new political outfit, National People’s Party which came up with a pre-poll alliance proposal with the likeminded parties.

Sangma had also talked to some leaders of both UDP and HSPDP, but did not get any favourable response from them.

HSPDP leader HS Lyngdoh made it clear those who fight together for the cause of a Khasi-Jaintia State will be given pre- poll support.

“The emerging trend is that every political party wants to fight the election separately and the seat adjustment in Meghalaya context where there are only limited seats of 60 also has become difficult”, the NPP leader Conrad Sangma said.

The UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy has ruled out any possibility of pre-poll alliance with the like- minded parties and the party is poised to field candidates in all the 60 constituencies. The Congress will do the same.

NCP leader Sanbor Shullai recently made it clear there will not be any pre-poll arrangement with any party in the run-up to the Assembly elections.

The BJP, KHNAM,MDP, Trinamool Congress, LJP and CPI among others have also no other option than to fight alone since major political parties of the State have ruled out pre-poll alliance.

However, in coalition politics of Meghalaya, every political party desires to have post poll alliances and the past governments had the support of almost all the political parties in various combinations.

While BJP has never aligned with the Congress due to its ideology during the formation of the Governments, it was part of non-Congress coalition governments in the past.
