Guwahati: The Opposition on Thursday came virtually armed with ‘pistols and ammunition’ to take on the government in the Assam Assembly.

The BJP legislators were ‘armed’ with toy pistols in the Assembly premises in support of an unstarred question brought by their MLA Ranjit Kumar Das.

Das had sought information from the state Commerce and Industries Minister on the number of toy pistol manufacturing units in the state and details thereof.

Minister Pradyut Bordoloi, in his reply, said that there were no such factories or units in the state registered with his department nor has such a factory been alloted any government subsidy.

Maintaining that these toy pistols were also having a negative impact on the minds of children, the MLA further questioned if the government could take steps to ban sale of such products.

Bordoloi, while refraining on commenting on banning sale of such toys, said the Industries department was in no way encouraging toy pistol manufacturing units or such factories.

Talking to reporters later, Das and BJP legislature party chief Prasanta Phukan maintained that the easy availability of toy pistols was seriously affecting the mindset of young children and pushing them towards a violent nature.

The two MLAs also posed with toy pistols outside the Assembly and made a case against the sale of toy pistols. (UNI)
