MAWKYRWAT, Aug 5: The Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) from Ranikor circle on Thursday called on South West Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner, C Kharkongor, alleging that overladen coal trucks ply freely during wee hours through Ranikor area, causing damage to roads.
Seeking action against such coal-laden trucks, KSU president Marconi Thnongni, while addressing the pressmen, said that locals residing between Ranikor and Trongpleng areas have earlier suffered due to deplorable road conditions caused by coal-laden trucks. “But now the Ranikor-Mawsynram road is in a good condition and if not stopped immediately, these illegal overloaded trucks will bring misery again to our people, especially pregnant women and those who need immediate and medical attention in Shillong,” he said.
“The Union was very concerned with the increase in number of illegal overloaded coal trucks that ply through Ranikor area because we have seen that the prime reason behind the damages on the road from Ranikor to Mawsynram in 2017-19 was these illegal coal overloaded trucks,” Thnongni said.
Alleging that overladen coal trucks have, in the past three weeks, been coming from Nongjri area and travel through the Ranikor-Mawsynram road during the dead of the night, he said, “Therefore, today we met the Deputy Commissioner and demanded that the District Administration should take stern action against these illegal coal-laden trucks that bring misery to our people by damaging the public roads besides involving in illegal activities”
Informing that the DC also has assured of looking into the issue, Thnongni also appealed to the Dorbar Shnong to come forward and act against such illegal activities.
