Guwahati: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is going to have an alliance with the newly-formed Nationalist People’s Party (NPP) in Meghalaya for the forthcoming Assembly election in the hill state.

A senior BJP leader based in the North East informed that confabulations were on with the NPP headed by former Lok Sabha Speaker PA Sangma for an alliance.

The BJP which is yet to gain a formidable ground in Meghalaya is planning to focus on 15 of the 60 Assembly constituencies.

The saffron party intends to field candidates having good social standing in Meghalaya. The party sees an opportunity in having a tie-up with NPP for the vast experience of its leader PA Sangma in Meghalaya politics.

Sangma floated the NPP after he quit the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) and most of the NCP leaders and State legislators have sided with him much to the woe of his former party.
