SHILLONG, Aug 20: The much-awaited inauguration of Meghalaya’s 12th district is likely to happen once the COVID-19 situation in the state improves, Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has informed.
Talking to reporters on Friday, the chief minister said that the expected inauguration of the upcoming district, slated for August 15, could not happen due to the COVID-19 situation.
“We had decided to postpone the inauguration of the new district after discussion with the local leaders from the area. We have jointly agreed that once the COVID-19 situation improves, then we will go ahead with the inauguration of Mairang district,” the CM said.
He, however, stated that there have been requests from the people of the area that the district should be made functional at the earliest.
“The people in March this year had requested that the inauguration should be done as soon as May. It was during this time that COVID-19 numbers had started to come down,” Conrad said, adding that the people were explained about the situation and it was deferred.
