SHILLONG: Police have intensified hunt for the self-styled chairman of ANVC (B) Rimpu Marak who, according to the police, is involved in several criminal activities in Garo Hills.

The earlier name of Rimpu Bernard Marak was Torik Marak and he functioned as the spokesperson of the parent organization, ANVC before he joined the ANVC (B) formed by its self-styled commander-in-chief Mukost Marak.

After joining ANVC (B), Rimpu issued a series of statements by saying that the militant outfit would ensure peace and normalcy in Garo Hills besides assuring that they would not resort to any violence. A senior police official said that several statements of Rimpu were a cover up to engage in extortions, kidnappings and killings. The recent incident was the attack on GNLA militants resulting in the death of a cadre.

“We are concerned over the violent activities being initiated by ANVC(B) and a hunt is on to get its chairman “, police said. After the ANVC(B) expressed its desire to hold talks with the Government, the state Home Department had sent queries to all the superintendents of police in Garo Hills to know the status of the activities of ANVC (B).

According to police, talks with militant organisations are possible only if they give up arms and in the case of ANVC (B) and GNLA, the violent activities are on the rise.

Earlier, the Government had ruled out any talks with ANVC(B) and GNLA for their continued violent activities. “We will go hard on the members of both ANVC (B) and GNLA to maintain law and order in Garo Hills at all cost,” the senior police official said.
