SHILLONG, Aug 30: The poor maintenance of the 68-km Umiam-Jorabat Expressway has once again come to the fore, with many recent travellers, alleging discomforting road experiences, all thanks to the potholes. Toll taxes continue to be levied, nevertheless.
A tourist vehicle driver informed that for return journey, they have to pay Rs 120 every day provided that they have FASTag. However, they have to shell out more than double of that, which is Rs 320, for a return journey if the situation is the otherwise.
“When people are paying the toll tax, we don’t understand why this road is not being maintained at all,” another tourist driver said, informing there are few stretches on the road which has not been repaired for long.
An official at the National Highways Authority of India, when contacted, however informed that the maintenance of road is being carried out, although at a slow pace. He also acceded that the maintenance work has taken a hit due to COVID-related restrictions.
While the road has potholes ranging from different sizes, many argue that they deserve a smooth and safe driving/riding experience, especially when they are being levied the toll tax. As per the fee effective from April 1, 2021, bus and trucks have to pay Rs 410 for return journey while vehicles, above seven or more axles, have to shell out Rs 780 for a two-way journey.
