SHILLONG: Operations will come to a halt at the state’s lone functional airport in Umroi following Alliance Air’s decision to discontinue its services from Sunday.
Sources on Thursday said that the lone ATR flight being operated by Air India’s subsidiary Alliance air ‘will land at the Umroi Airport on January 6’.
The development would mean that the State would not figure in the country’s airlines route map till a new service operator starts its operations in Meghalaya.
While Air India is arranging additional flights in the Kolkata-Aizawl-Guwahati route for four days from Saturday, following Alliance Air’s withdrawal of services between Aizawl and Guwahati from January 1, nothing official has made known on the fate of the Umroi airport.
Earlier, the Transport minister AT Mondal had stated that the Government would pursue the matter with the Alliance Air and DoNER ministry for continuation of air services from the Umroi airport.
Alliance Air had decided to suspend its operation in the Northeastern states due to non-payment of subsidies by the North Eastern Council (NEC).
