SHILLONG: In view of the proposed meeting of the State government with the ANVC in the city on Saturday, the Garo Students’ Union (GSU) has laid down certain demands with respect to improvements and amendments of laws passed by the Garo Hills Autonomous District Council (GHADC) besides others.

Demanding 100 percent reservation of indigenous tribals in the GHADC, the GSU on Friday also expressed the need for reservation of seats for women in the district council besides de-politicization of the council.

“For better development of Garo Hills, we also demand a direct funding from the centre to the district council”, GSU president Tengsak G Momin said.

While expressing a need to amend the obsolete laws to keep up with the contemporary situation, Momin also said that the GHADC should implement the provisions of the Land Transfer Act 1972 to ensure protection and preservation of indigenous land.

Moreover, the Union has also put forth their demand to scrap out the Mouza 6 in Garo Hills which entitles non-tribals to get hold of land pattas.
