SHILLONG, Sep 13: Cabinet Minister Hamletson Dohling has suggested schoolchildren to tag trees with their names, take care of them and see them grow and bear fruit.
The minister made this suggestion during a tree plantation drive at Nongumlong village, Shillong.
A statement in this regard informed that the Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong, as part of its mega tree plantation initiative ‘Project Hariyali’, had organised a tree plantation drive at Nongumlong village, Shillong, which was attended by the minister.
Sponsored by Mahindra Finance, Project Hariyali is a green movement which kicked off in Meghalaya on September 7.
“Since then, the club has conducted plantation drives with fruit-bearing tree saplings at Wahkhen Village, two locations in Ri Bhoi district (Kyrdemkulai village and Rilong Umran Farm), multiple locations in West Jaintia Hills in collaboration with Rotary Club of Jowai and concluded at Nongumlong village,” the statement said.
During the plantation drive, Dohling argued that “green is the future” and accentuated the need to take care of plants.
Expressing gratitude to the Rotary Club of Orchid City Shillong and Mahindra Finance, the minister, while assuring support, asked the Club to reach widely and help the community under his constituency and throughout Meghalaya.
Others who expressed gratitude to the Club and Mahindra Finance include the headman, Dorbar members and villagers.
