SHILLONG: The Chief Election Officer P Naik on Saturday sought a report from the principal secretary of Social Welfare department PW Ingty over the alleged violation of the model code of conduct with regards to the appointment of Theilin Phanbuh as the new chairperson of the Meghalaya State Women’s Commission (MSWC).

“I have sought a report from the principal secretary on the matter,” he said.

Questions are being raised over the timing of appointment of the MSWC chief as the appointment came just few hours after the model Code of Conduct came into force following the announcement of the election date by the Election Commission of India .

The State Government appointed Phanbuh as the new MSWC chief after the incumbent Roshan Warjri put in her papers to contest the Assembly elections.

While the ECI announced the date of election on Friday at around 3.30 pm, the notification for appointment of Phanbuh reached the newspaper offices late evening of Friday.

When contacted, Ingty said that he discussed the matter with the Chief Election Officer and clarified his stand on the appointment.

As per the official notification signed by Governor RS Mooshahary, Phanbuh has been appointed as the new chairperson with immediate effect till the expiry of its term.
