SHILLONG, Oct 7: Chief Minister of Meghalaya, Conrad Sangma, has called for active community participation with involvement of youths in particular in the climate change mitigation programmes.
The CM said this while inaugurating a day-long workshop on ‘Universalizing Community Led Natural Resource Management in Meghalaya’ at the State Convention Centre here on Thursday, which was also attended by Minister in-charge District Council Affairs, Lahkmen Rymbui, and Chief Secretary, RV Suchiang.
The workshop aimed to enhance ecosystem services and resilience to climate change by mainstreaming community-led natural resources management and reviewing the policies, legal and institutional framework involving Autonomous District Councils, Forest and other departments for strengthening capacity and convergence.
In his address, he said that the objective of mitigating the effects of climate change can be achieved only when the different stakeholders work in coordination.
The CM, however, emphasised that it is equally important to create parallel livelihood opportunities for the people even as he added that there is always a conflict between economic growth and maintaining the ecological balance.
