AGARTALA:Normal life came to a standstill in Tripura on Wednesday following dawn-to-dusk bandh separately called by the ruling Left Front and opposition Congress.
The 12-hour bandh passed off peacefully with no untoward incident was reported during the bandh, police sources said here. Prohibitory order (Section-144) that had been imposed on July 11, will continue till July 14 to avert any kind of untoward incident.
Government offices including Civil Secretariat, educational institutions remained closed while vehicles were off the road during the bandh. The shutters were down in the shop-markets- business establishments.
Congress greeted the people for overwhelming response to the bandh. Talking to media, PCC spokesman Ratan Chakarborty said that it was the reflection of the people’s faith on the Congress movement.
“The government should learn a lesson from its misdeeds”, he said.
It may be noted that Congress had called the bandh in protest against the police atrocities in which one youth businessman shot dead and several others were injured.
The Left Front also congratulated the people for making the bandh a grand success. CPM state secretary Bijan Dhar said people of the state vehemently protested the Congress hooliganism through making bandh a total.Meanwhile, Union Minister for Social Justice Mukul Wasnik on Wednesday arrived here to take stock of the situation after July 11 incident. The Union Minister visited the house of Papai Saha (24), who was shot dead by Tripura State Rifles (TSR) jawans. He also interacted with journalists who suffered injures during the clash between Congress supporters and police-TSR in front of Congress Bhavan on July 11 evening.
Terming the situation here is grave; Wasnik said that he would submit a detail report to Congress High Command Sonia Gandhi on the prevailing situation in the Left ruled state.
