SHILLONG: The State unit of the BJP has taken strong note of the announcement of a scheme by Union Minister of Commerce, Industries and Textiles, Anand Sharma, terming it as violation of the election model code of conduct.

According to a Press Information Bureau (PIB) press release issued on January 17, the Union Minister announced a scheme on Usage of Agrotextiles in North East region with a five-year budget of Rs 55 crore during the inauguration of the second edition of TechnoTex-2013 in New Delhi.

Sharma had further added that a special scheme has also been formulated in the Ministry of Textiles for the North East region ‘for promotion of the Textiles Industry in this region by allowing fiscal flexibility through relaxation of parameters to suit localised region specific requirements’.

BJP state general secretary Dipayan Chakraborty, while informing that he has intimated the matter to the BJP Central leaders in New Delhi, said, “Our legal team and Central leaders in New Delhi will take up this matter at the right platform.”

Chakraborty termed the announcement by the Union Minister as a clear violation of the model code of conduct as elections have already been scheduled in three states of the North East region. When contacted, Chief Electoral Officer P Naik stated that it was a clear violation of the model code of conduct and added that he would pursue the matter if a complaint is lodged in this regard.
