SHILLONG: With foot taps to accompany the milieu of rhythmic drum beats, people from all ages brandishing Dongmusa’s, participated in a march aptly named, ‘Night of a 1000 lights’ organized by the District Administration on Thursday.

Setting the tone for the National Voters Day to be observed throughout the country on Friday, the procession was taken out from different localities and culminated at the State Central Library premises.

It may be mentioned that a painting competition for children and youth of the district, essay writing competition on the topic ‘My Voice-My Vote’ and online quiz competition with 93.5 Red FM had started since January 19 and is being held daily from 5pm to 7pm.

East Khasi Hills Deputy Commissioner Sanjay Goyal while speaking to media persons about the initiative said, “We are celebrating this day in such a unique way to create awareness among the voters.”

He also maintains that since Meghalaya will be going for poll next month so the focus as of now lies on voting since there is no point in enrolling the voters if they don’t come and vote.

According to Goyal, the exercise of voting in urban areas is low than the rural areas and initiatives being currently undertaken revolves around the idea to involve various youth and people of the urban localities so that they can come forward and participate in the voting.

Later, a quiz competition, Phawar Competition and cultural programmes were also organized on the occasion and further, a big canvas was placed at the premises of State Central Library allowing people to pen down their signatures as well as to scribble their thoughts and ideas for a better Meghalaya.
