SHILLONG: Community and Rural Development Minister Saleng Sangma, who was denied Congress ticket for the upcoming Assembly election, resigned from the party while also giving up his Cabinet berth and the MLA’s seat on Friday.

After tendering his resignation, Sangma said, “I cannot stay in the party anymore after being betrayed despite having done so much (for the party).”

Sangma submitted his resignation to the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly Joint Secretary and also put it up to a Congress official at the Congress Bhavan here.

He now plans to contest the election as an Independent candidate either from Salmanpara in South West Garo Hills or Gambegre in West Garo Hills district.

The announcement also puts to rest speculations of Sangma contesting the election on a UDP ticket.

Sangma also said he has formed a forum of Independents to fight the coming election and it is especially for those who have been denied ticket by the party.
