SHILLONG: Sitting legislator from Mawlai and Congress candidate Founder S Cajee on Wednesday claimed that several United Democratic Party (UDP) leaders would be supporting him in the upcoming election.

Talking to media persons here in the city, Cajee claimed that recently general secretary of the UDP MM Nongsiej had resigned from the party to support his candidature from Mawlai.

Besides Nongsiej, former minister and UDP leader SD Khongwir had also extended his support to him, Cajee claimed.

“Although he (SD Khongwir) is physically with the UDP but spiritually he is with me,” he told reporters.

Khongwir, a UDP central committee member, had earlier announced his support to the Mawlai legislator after which he was issued a show cause notice by the UDP.

It may be reminded that the senior UDP leader had openly campaigned for Cajee in the 2008 Assembly election, prompting his party to term his coalition with the Congress candidate as a ‘mistake’.

According to Cajee, even UDP youth leaders have also extended their support to him.

The Mawlai legislator said that regular water supply would be his main priority besides developing Mawlai into a township.

To a query on who he considered as his toughest opponent, Cajee stated that his opponents ‘lacked experience’.

“They are equal to me but I had struggled for many years before becoming an MLA,” he said.

Reacting to a query on whether delimitation would be a major factor in the election, he said that though some areas have been removed, yet many new areas have been added to the Mawlai constituency which has brought more voters.

Mawlai is the biggest constituency in the State with over thirty-three thousand voters.
