SHILLONG: On Valentine’s Day on February 14, social activists, writers, thinkers, celebrities, women and men in the city would join in a campaign called the ONE BILLION RISING, in their appeal to stop violence against women and children.
The event will be held at Madan Iewrynghep, Laitumkhrah, at 4 pm.
The North East Network (NEN), the main organizer of the event said in a statement on Tuesday that it is using arts and other performing arts to raise the demand to end violence against women and children.
“We will strike, dance, and rise in defiance of the injustices women and children suffer and that we will not tolerate violence of any kind,” NEN said.
According to Annie Sohtun, Programme Manager, NEN, Meghalaya is becoming an unsafe place for women.
As per the State Crime Record Bureau, Meghalaya recorded an alarming number of 236 crimes against women in 2012.
“The United Nation states that 1 in 3 women on the planet will be beaten or raped during her lifetime. That is more than one billion women living on the planet today,” Sohtun said.
The evening, marked with myriad of expressions in the form of song, dance, chanting, traditional drum beats will raise a demand to end violence against women and children.
Live Bands like Summersalt, 4th Element, Shyllong and many more will perform at this solidarity event.
