NONGPOH, Dec 18: In an attempt to take note of the weaving scenario in the state, Secretary, Union Ministry of Textiles, Upendra Prasad Singh on Saturday paid a visit to the famous Diwon-Umden Eri Silk village. Accompanied by Meghalaya Secretary, Department of Textiles, Dr. Pooja Pandey and Deputy Commissioner, R.M Kurbah, Singh participated in a programme and addressed the weavers of the area in DUYA hall Diwon.
Addressing the gathering here, Singh expressed his immense pleasure on associating himself with the local weavers of the area.
Mentioning that the chief reason behind his visit was to observe the weavers’ activities on ground level and listen to their problems, he informed that the central government is taking significant initiatives to promote Eri Silk, as it serves as a sustainable source of livelihood for people in the rural areas. The Secretary as such brought up that the Government will be soon launching the e-commerce venture for marketing of products by weavers and farmers themselves.
As part of his visit, Singh inspected the Design Innovation Resource Centre (DIRC), Common Facility Centre and some of the households of the weavers and dyers. He spoke with the weavers, farmers, dyers and reelers of the Diwon-Umden Eri Silk village to acquire first-hand knowledge of the state of their business as well as their key issues. In the interaction, the local weavers pointed out that lack of proper marketing for their products was a pivotal issue they had been tackling with, in their business activities.
