Purno, Lapang campaign in Jaintia Hills

JOWAI: Election fever is running high in Mowkaiaw Assembly constituency in West Jaintia Hills. A trend that is being noticed this time round is the active participation of women folk in the public meetings and public rallies being organized by various political parties.

People of Mowkaiaw constituency on Thursday were very busy attending public meetings at two separate places organised by candidates of the National People’s Party (NPP) and the Congress at Mukhap and Mowkaiaw villages respectively.

NPP national president Purno A Sangma, who arrived by a chopper, landed at a football ground at Laskein and attended a public rally at Mukhap football ground, around 300m from the helipad.

The public meeting was organized by sitting legislator ECB Bamon, who is contesting on an NPP ticket from Mowkaiaw. The meeting was attended by NPP state president Dr WR Kharlukhi, district president O Lamin, besides other active members of the party.

Around 3000 supporters of Bamon attended the public rally.

Addressing the rally Sangma urged the people of Mowkaiaw to vote for the NPP for quality development of the area and for prosperity.

Meanwhile, Congress candidate from the same constituency, Qually Suiam, also the Deputy CEM of JHADC, held a public rally at Mowkaiaw attended by MPCC president DD Lapang, Shillong MP and former Union Minister of State Vincent H Pala and AICC secretary in charge Meghalaya Mukul Wasnik.

“The Congress has given us an autonomous state during the tenure of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. It has also given us the North-Eastern Hill University (NEHU) and has benefited the villagers in the rural areas through MGNREGA and many others development schemes,” Lapang said while urging the people of the constituency to vote for Congress to ensure stability and prosperity.
