SHILLONG: Chief Minister Dr Mukul Sangma on Thursday hinted that Mairang would be among the favourite to be awarded a district status if the Congress is voted to power.

The Chief Minister, however, did not make any direct assurance while addressing a public rally at Mairang to campaign in favour of Congress candidate Dr Eureka P Lyngdoh.

Pointing to the Congress manifestoes where the party has promised to create two more new districts in the coming five years, Dr Sangma said the people of Mairang deserve more then what they are getting at present.

“I am aware what the people of this area are aspiring for. I assure that the Congress would give you the best if you support the party by voting in favour of the Congress candidate,” Dr Sangma said.

The Chief Minister also claimed that the wave across the State was in favour of the Congress party.

“We are going to form the next government with the blessings and goodwill of the people of the State,” he said.

Dr Sangma said he has gone to campaign across the State to reach out to the people and urge them to give absolute majority to the Congress this time.

“We have done some survey to understand the mindset of the people. This survey is being done by an independent organisation which is not affiliated to any of the political parties,” the Chief Minister informed.

As per the survey 60 to 70 per cent of the people across the State want the Congress to come back to power, he stated, while asserting that the Congress would fulfill all the promises made in the manifestoes.

While the focus of the party manifestoes is to bring overall development in the State, priority has been given to issues concerning the youth and women, he said.
