SHILLONG, Jan 5: Cabinet minister and Chairman of the Regional Committee of West Khasi Hills, Renikton L Tongkhar, said that the final decision on the recommendations of the two regional committees of both states on the border row will be taken at the chief minister’s level meeting which is likely to be held next week.
Informing about his meeting with the Chairman of the regional committee headed by Assam minister Atul Bora along with the senior officials of both Meghalaya and Assam government held in Guwahati on Tuesday, Tongkhar said that the two regional committees again met to discuss how they can assist both the Chief Ministers in taking a final decision to have some kind of a settlement on the area of differences in this particular sector taken up in the first phase.
“But at the end, our job was to submit the recommendations to the respective state governments. The ball is now in the court of the two Chief Ministers,” Tongkhar said.
He, however, said that there are agreements and disagreements on the points which were discussed between the two regional committees. “We cannot have an agreement on everything. But the good part was that the whole exercise was carried in a very cordial way,” the West Khasi Hills committee chairman said.
He further said that the recommendations which the committee has submitted are on the basis of the will of the people. “We are going any additional recommendations to the state government after yesterday’s meeting,” Tongkhar said
Meanwhile, he said that he is confident that any decision which will be taken will be in favour of Meghalaya since majority of the population residing in the area are Khasis and Garos. “I can confidently say that there will be some positive results from this exercise which has been undertaken. It is not going to be a waste,” he added.
