SHILLONG: Inefficiency of some polling officers led to the delay in completion of voting process in certain polling station in East Khasi Hills. This was clearly reflected as the delay in completion of poll precess actually took place in areas where the turnout of voters was very less.

As per reports, the voting in Mawpyrshong polling station under Mawkynrew constituency continued till 9 pm in the night.

One of the voters in the constituency, Riwin Lyngdoh said that he was standing in a queue from 12:30pm and he managed to cast his vote six hours later at 6:30 pm.

This delay did not go down well with the people in the area since there were only 954 voters in the polling station.According to sources, the voting process in 2008 Assembly election was completed within 3 pm in Mawpyrshong polling station despite any difference in the total number of voters then and now.

A similar incident also took place in the polling station at Lumshyiap under Pynthorumkhrah constituency where interestingly, the problem of delay was only in the queue of male voters due to the inefficient polling officers who caused an easily avoidable delay. The queue of the women voters in these polling stations was moving very smoothly unlike the men.

The voting in this polling station continued till 7 pm in the evening.

A senior official expressed surprise that there was such delay in the constituency under East Khasi Hills.

“I was expecting that they would have the best of polling officers in East Khasi Hills,” a senior government official added.
