SHILLONG: The Chief Electoral Officer P Naik has decided to write to the Election Commission of India to provide permanent EVMs for Meghalaya in future elections.
“We are planning to write to the Election Commission to supply new EVMs for Meghalaya which can be used only in the State in all future elections,” Naik said on Sunday.
There were complaints from many polling stations on the malfunctioning of EVMs during the polling hours on Saturday, resulting in delay in polling in several polling stations across the State.
The EVMs which were used in Meghalaya had been used in elections in other parts of the country before being brought to the State.
“We admit that EVMs had failed, but they were rectified by our engineers. The age factor of EVMs was a cause of concern,” Naik said.
According to Naik, elections in Meghalaya in 2008 were held with new EVMs.
