Polls: Over 80 per cent turnout in all districts

SHILLONG: Almost all the districts including the newly floated ones have witnessed huge turnout in the recently held Assembly elections in the State.

As per the information released by the election department all the districts witnessed over 80 per cent turnout.

In East Garo Hills, the overall percentage was 83.83 per cent while in South Garo Hills, 86.9 per cent cast their ballots. South West Garo Hills performed even better than the other two districts to register 90 per cent voter turnout.

The total percentage in West Garo Hills stood at 87 per cent while North Garo Hills managed 86.6 per cent.

Ri-Bhoi recorded a high 88.24 per cent turnout while East Jaintia Hills performed exceedingly well with 92.24 per cent of the electorates casting their ballots.

South West Khasi Hills District also fared well to register 92.02 per cent turnout while the 90.62 percent of the voters exercised franchise in West Jaintia Hills.

The turnout in West Khasi Hills remained at 88.53 while that in the most advance district of the state East Khasi Hills recorded 83.43 turn out without the inclusion of the postal ballots.

It may be mentioned that approximately 88.06 per cent voters turned out to cast their ballots on February 23 despite the bandh called by the proscribed HNLC.

Out of the total 15,02,509 votes in the State, 13,05,439 votes were cast on Saturday last.
