NONGPOH, Jan 20: The resident of Raid Madan Kyrdem in Ri-Bhoi district, on Thursday, have come out in protest against the proposed Solid Waste Management project at Mawlawai village for the second time stating that the site of the project is the source of water for several villages of Raid Madan Kyrdem.
Villagers from Mawlawai, Kyrdem, Mawkyrdep, Klew and Mawbsein along with placards assembled at the Madan Kyrdem playground on Thursday to raise their protest against the project which was also attended by the local legislator, George B Lyngdoh.
Notably, the villagers had recently staged similar protests while reasoning that the project will affect the sources of water and their farming lands.
While citing the Marten in Mawiong, East Khasi Hills, they said that the project will create health hazards.
The villagers went on to allege that the local populace was not kept in the loop when the proposal for the project was floated, while adding that few vested interests called the shots.
Moreover, local legislator George B Lyngdoh, who has fully extended his support to the villagers, said that he was not informed about any proposal in regard with such a project, even as he informed that he will write to the state government seeking clarification on the matter.
