SHILLONG: United Democratic Party (UDP) working president Bindo M Lanong on Tuesday said that unless something ‘extra ordinary’ happens there is no room for the UDP having a post poll arrangement with the Congress.

Lanong informed that the UDP has decided to adopt a ‘wait and watch’ policy on the post poll scenario in the State despite the comments of MPCC chief DD Lapang that the Congress was ready to form a post poll alliance with ‘likeminded parties’.

“Until the votes are counted we cannot comment anything. We can only say that the UDP will fetch large chunk of seats,” Lanong said.

According to the UDP leader, there is a consensus among the UDP that the Congress should sit in the opposition since the party is a divided house.

Asked about alliance with other political parties minus the Congress, Lanong said “It is too early to comment anything at the moment.”

Political gurus in the State are of the opinion that the deciding factor for a Government minus the Congress will be the PA Sangma led NPP and Independents.

Congress dissidents, who are contesting as Independents, can spoil the chances of the party getting maximum number of seats, the political analysts say.

If the NPP can retain the 15 seats which they had won during the last elections in 2008, the party will go for a tie up with regional parties and not with the Congress, due to their ‘ideological differences’.

The NPP has already held a meeting on Monday at the party office in Shillong.

NPP leader Conrad Sangma said that at the party level they are discussing the poll scenario.

“We are also in touch with likeminded political parties,” Sangma said.
