SHILLONG: Football lovers in Shillong will witness their first ever day-night football tournament next month at the JN Stadium, where floodlights are being installed.
Commissioner and Secretary of Sports and Youth Affairs DP Wahlang, on Tuesday, told The Shillong Times that the floodlights are being installed at a very rapid pace.
“The flood lights will be installed in two weeks time from now,” he said here.
In addition, the first tournament to be played under lights will be T Ao football tournament for eight North-Eastern states, which kicks off on March 18.
The project is a boon for football lovers in the city as they have not been able to enjoy football under artificial lights. With the installation of the floodlights, there is every hope that some day-night I-League matches can be held.
The NEC has funded Rs 4.99 crore for the floodlights.
Similarly, the laying of a synthetic athletics track at the JN Stadium is also ongoing and 30 per cent of the work has been completed.
According to Wahlang, the materials for the surface are being brought in from abroad.
The Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs had sanctioned Rs 5.5 crore for the synthetic track under a special scheme.
