SHILLONG: They fought election on Khasi-Jantia and Garo state agenda respectively and attribute their success to the cause they pursue.

The Garo National Council (GNC) leader Clifford Marak, lone winner from the party, said the people elected him to follow the dream of a Garo state.

While the GNC won the single seat after fielding six candidates, the HSPDP, which also went to the polls on

the demand for Khasi-Jaintia state won four seats, even as the party fielded 17 candidates.

Marak, who is also the GNC president has been in the forefront organizing rallies in Garo Hills raising the statehood demand in the past.

“I would continue to raise the issue together with HSPDP leader HS Lyngdoh,” he said.

It is after 10 years that the GNC leader, who won the Assembly election four times staged a comeback.

Meanwhile, HSPDP veteran, HS Lyngdoh, who had in the past met Marak as part of joint campaign for the separate Khasi-Jaintia and Garo state, feels that the ‘resurgence’ of both HSPDP and GNC will further strengthen their statehood cause.

“We will make efforts jointly to fulfill our long pending demand,” the HSPDP supremo said, adding that he hopes to meet the GNC leader shortly to discuss their future course of action.
