SHILLONG: The UDP Parliamentary Party (PP) on Friday unanimously resolved to sit in the Opposition even as it decided to hold discussions with likeminded parties to form an alliance of the opposition partners.

“We have taken this decision respecting the verdict of the people who do not want us to be in the Government,” UDP president Dr Donkupar Roy told reporters after the PP meeting attended by all the eights elected MLAs of the party.

According to Dr Roy, the party would need another two legislators to be able to elect the Leader of the Opposition.

“We have decided to hold dialogues with all likeminded parties who would be sitting in the opposition. We are eager to forge an alliance of all the opposition partners,” the UDP president said.

Stating that the HSPDP have also decided to sit in the opposition, Dr Roy said, “We would be talking with the HSPDP on the possibilities of forging an alliance.”

Dr Roy stressed that the party was committed to playing the role of an effective and vibrant opposition.

Dr Roy also informed that as per the party constitution and also on the basis of the voice of the majority of the UDP legislators, he has been elected as the UDP Parliamentary Party leader. Mentioning that the election of the opposition leader would be done after taking a consensus of the alliance partners, Dr Roy said, “It is necessary that the PP leader ultimately becomes the opposition leader.”
