NONGSTOIN, Jan 31: A sudden inspection of the National Power Hydel Project in Kyrshai by the West Khasi Hills district administration has stirred concern and dissatisfaction among the Khasi-Jaintia & Garo People (FKJGP).
According to the general secretary of FKJGP, Kyrshai area unit, Probin Snar, the office of the Water Resources, Nongstoin, along with the district magistrate, conducted an inspection of the proposed site for the project at Wahkhri river on January 27.
“Though the intention of the department is to listen to the issues and opinions of the villagers and submit the report to the state government, the FKJGP along with the villagers of Kyrshai area will continue to oppose the project,” Snar said.
The civic body further asked the MDA government to look into the matter thoroughly and insisted the KHADC and the Syiem of the area to not issue the NOC to the project.
It may be mentioned that the hydel power project was earlier proposed by the Assam government through the Brahmaputra Board in Kyrshai area. But taking into account the probable effects it could have on the people living there, the project has seen vehement opposition from the FKJGP as well as the locals of Kyrshai.
